Timeline
Where I have worked and what I did there. Most recent first.
-
Undergraduate Researcher
UBC PhysAI Lab
- Contributing to a real2sim2real pipeline for thin shell deformable material manipulation under Prof. Peter Yichen Chen, working toward autonomous material parameter identification from video to eliminate manual simulation tuning.
-
Software Lead, Sensor Fusion / Controls / Firmware / Navigation
UBC Thunderbots
- Designed and deployed a Kalman filter ball tracker with a physics-based motion model, Mahalanobis gating and tuned heuristics, cutting MSE by 29x and catastrophic errors by 30x against the legacy linear regression filter, measured against simulator ground truth under realistic sensor conditions.
- Integrated an IMU into the robot localizer, implementing coordinate frame calibration and gyroscope and accelerometer fusion to improve state estimation between vision updates.
- Re-architected the trajectory planner's cost evaluation, extracting collision checking into a dedicated class so that result caching and collision maths stopped being interleaved, making the planner's hottest path safe to modify.
- Cut planner CPU by 18 to 20 percent by rewriting the collision evaluator to accumulate cost as it scans and abandon a candidate path the moment it exceeds the best cost found so far, skipping the two most expensive obstacle scans entirely, and verified selection was unchanged by asserting the chosen path's cost against a full recomputation on every tick.
- Benchmarked the optimisation end to end against the previous release, recording CPU under identical simulated matches with the two teams swapped to rule out asymmetry between sides.
- Added a stop primitive so a robot halts rather than driving into an unavoidable collision, triggering above 2.0 m/s within 0.2s of impact, and validated the trigger conditions in simulation.
- Rebuilt tbots.py, the tool the whole team uses to launch the simulator, run tests and flash robots, adding an interactive prompt so common tasks no longer require memorising flags, and refactoring the entry point so adding an option touches one dataclass instead of several function signatures.
- Expanded ball placement test coverage by parametrising scenarios from the 2023 RoboCup SSL technical challenge, eliminating redundant code while covering every play case, and wrote unit tests and simulations for defensive threat evaluation that improved accurate threat blocking by 25%.
- Refactored Thunderscope's icon handling, replacing custom SVG-based QIcon loaders with QtAwesome and improving UI rendering efficiency by 20%.
-
Machine Learning Research Assistant (Co-op)
de Boer Lab, UBC SBME
- Improved cross-dataset promoter prediction by 9% Pearson correlation, designing and fine-tuning CNN and RNN architectures with structured transfer learning pipelines on large-scale MPRA datasets.
- Built a modular Snakemake pipeline for RNA-seq processing, automating preprocessing, alignment and quantification with metadata tracking and visualisation built in, which cut experiment iteration time and made runs reproducible.
- Worked with noisy, high-dimensional biological data at scale, which took careful curation and efficient training workflows.
-
Website Development Team Member
UBC Rapid
- Improved user experience by 25%, redesigning and implementing responsive React layouts with a consistent component structure and clearer visual hierarchy.
-
Modelling Subteam Member
UBC Rapid
- Delivered 40+ functional hardware components, producing and iterating CAD models and 3D-printed parts for UBC stakeholders on tight turnarounds.
- Obtained the SOLIDWORKS CSWA certification.
-

UBC Rapid
- Wrote scientific reports on several exotic 3D printing filaments, covering material properties, tensile test results, and recommended printing parameters.
- Ran tensile tests on exotic materials in a student lab, including uniaxial tensile and 3-point bending tests.
- Followed ASTM standards for report generation.
